The original meaning in medieval times was "steward, i.e. one who manages the property of another". In English and other European languages, including Yiddish and Dutch, the name can also be spelled Hoffmann, Hofmann, Hofman, Huffman, Hofmans.
Our Hofmann family is found in 1667 in Naabmühle when Clara Anna was born to Wenzeslaus and Barbara.
It seems likely that the second line here is related to the first. Perhaps Joachim and Wolfgang are brothers or cousins.
