Grammy's quilts tended to the utilitarian rather than the ornate.  Hand sewn scraps from home made clothing, pieces of flour sacks, etc. cobbled together in interesting patterns. Mom sat with me one time and talked about the outfits she remembered.  In fact she was not sure with the piecework quilts if they were made by her Mom or by Granny, so it could be a combination of both.  I have these two at the moment.  Nearly 100 years old the material was very fragile and fraying in areas.  So, I decided to quilt them to give them more strength.  They will now hopefully last another 100 years, sharing the fabrics of Mom's youth.

The wool blanket is also Mary's.  I remember a similar one at our house, various wool squares with crocheted edges sewn together.

 Mary also has some wonderful hand painted pillow cases.

Then there is my Humpty-dumpty, still going strong more than sixty years later, although he did acquire a band aid a few years ago to the delight of a grandchild.

Grammy's Paintings: (47) Desert Scenes

The second picture here hung in my home for many years.  I gave it to Jessica, and she in turn gave it to her friend Elke.  I do not know anything about the three girls above or third picture.











I did find a few notes on desert pictures.  One may be the description of the picture I had.  Desert Fantasy, Santa Rita Mountains Green Valley Arizona. That picture was listed as 24 x 20 with a price of $150.

The second description was Desert Harvest - Catalina Mountains, Arizona (sold) 

Grammy's Pictures: (46) Heiligenblut Grossglockner Austria

I remember this painting of the Church of Holy Blood in Heiligenblut, Grossglockner, Austria, hanging on Grammy's wall in Green Valley.

It is 20 x 16 and was listed at $200 in one showing.  At a second show no price was given. It seems likely that it was painted from a photograph, as were many of Grammy's landscapes.

Grammy's Pictures: (44) Birds

Another constant in my childhood, this picture hung in the balcony-like hall of our Cleveland  Avenue home. "You," Mother said to Clare and I, "Are my two little birdies." This memory makes this picture special and a reminder of our mother's quiet, gentle love. I am especially fond of her early soft and lovely watercolors.  Jean Madden English This is one of the early watercolors painted April 1914.  It now belongs to Maura.

These a few figures that Grammy did when it was a "craze" according to Mom.  She notes that they were beautifully done but that Grammy found them "restrictive" and she went back to her paintings.

Grammy's Pictures: (42) Man and Woman

This painting was for years in the Green Valley home of mother's friend Blanche. It was returned to the family when Blanche died, a will directive. 

Mother spread her paintings far and wide. They were given to friends and family, given to those who did her favors or admired her art work.  She gave to bank tellers and clerks, to nuns and priests, gave willingly with love.

Her goal was that every grandchild have a painting, a goal she far surpassed. Who can count the paintings or measure the pleasure they gave and keep on giving.

This painting of what looks like a cattle drive belongs to Tim.

I have no information on this picture at all.

Grammy's Pictures: (40) Fisherman's Wharf Maine

I think there were two pictures of Fisherman's Wharf in Maine.  This on had a price of $400 on it and appears to be owned by someone in the family.    

In the notes from another show in Tubac, there is a listing for Fisherman's Wharf in Maine and a note that it was sold to Dolores Krebes for $85.  That painting was supposedly 19 x 15 inches, this one appears to be more of a square although I don't have a size noted.

"This painting of fishermen and their boats in the fog is one of my favorites. I love it's misty softness, the rolling clouds, the mystical feel of it.  It was my special choice, and I've passed it on to Patrick."  Jean English Madden

Grammy's Pictures: (38) Shepherdess with Flock

Grammy described this picture as "Shepherdess with her flock against towering cumulus (thick horizontal clouds with flat base and rounded masses piled up on each other) clouds.

Here it hangs lovingly in the home of Carol Cajacob.

 This picture of the Oregon coast is owned by Norene (Cajacob) Moser.

This is another painting of a photo taken by John Cajacob, dated July 1976

Grammy's Pictures: (35) Clare and Jean on Boat

This painting of Clare and Jean English on a sailboat in Lake Owasso was painted as a wedding present for Jan Cajacob and Bob Pohl in June 1968.  It is currently owned by  Carol Cajacob.
