A Little bit of Magic

 Early this week I had a Facebook Friend request.  After checking it out and noting the names Somers and Geraghty I quickly accepted.  Shortly there after I got a message from Jacqueline thanking me for accepting the request and that she had seen my blog post on the Somers and Wisconsin and that she was living in Roscommon and would like to connect.

Well here I was in Dublin, planning my trip to Athlone on Thursday....so I boldly said I'd love to connect how about in person.

How did I get so lucky!!!!

Not only did I meet a true family and locality historian but I got a wondrous tour of the family townlands and cemeteries.

So never tell me there are no fairies.  It had to be some kind of magic that that request came when it did.  A week later and I would have missed out on the opportunity of a lifetime!

Carna Clay

The townland where our Geraghty family lived had many spellings over the years.  Even today there are two, the official Carrownaclea and Carna Clay as found on the street sign.  See Ceathrú na Cléithe  

"Situated on the W. boundary A Quarter of the detached portion of Islandeady,  is bounded N. by Drumminwonagh, E by Cuggaula, S. by Sheeaun, & by the parish of Aughagower. It is about 2 miles N. of Westport.

Sir Richard O'Donnell, Proprietor. This townland contains 308 acres, 2970 (sic) of which are cultivated, no uncultivated, 4 Bog and 7 water. The lease given is 3 lives at the yearly rent of one pound per acre. County cess 3s. 6 1/2d per acre. There are two contiguous groups of houses having 12 or 13 houses in each, all of a bad description, except 3 or 4. No antiquities, on sd. townland. The soil is light of a lime and freestone natures, & produces, Potatoes, Corn and flax, no mineral."  (Ordnance Survey Name Books and Letters, published between 1824 and 1842)

Thus the land is described.  By the time the valuations were published the land was no longer owned by Richard O'Donnell, but rather was held in fee by Captain Alexander Wyndham. 




There are Geraghty's in Carna Clay today.  As we drove through on our townland travels a car stopped and asked if we needed help.  When we said this is where our Geraghty family had lived the woman replied that her father-in-law was a Geraghty.  Not being knock on the door travelers we were just happy to know we had found the right place!!!
